Mugging Computers: The Dhaka Style

MUG-A-PC:
Rumor says, there are several new PC mugging gangs evolved in the city lately. This creative young guys would be awaiting your appearance at a busy city street. If you are traveling back home on a rickshaw alone with your PC after getting it repaired, you are bound to get hijacked unless you are one of them.

Step by Step:
1. Someone would be keenly observing your PC while it’s getting repaired. He may even ask you about the configuration and price.
2. This guy informs his partners when you are about to get out of the market
3. A rickshaw will appear right in front and accept any amount you offer
4. Right before it comes to a circle (moor), the rickshaw puller would ask you to get down because he needs to fix his steering or something
5. Some guys would approach you from nowhere and push you down to the floor as if they haven’t seen you
6. Once you get up, they will start arguing blocking your view of the rickshaw
7. Meanwhile, a new rickshaw puller from the gang has already started riding it
8. Someone else from the gang would sit on as the passenger covering the PC with a carton or something
9. By the time you are out of the argument, the rickshaw is gone
10. Oh, by the way, they would take the busy street because you would think they have fled from the empty one

NB: Even if you find your own PC, their gang will make up something and you would get beaten up as if you were the mugger. Generally, local police is also involved to the crime.

FAMOUS SPOTS:
1. Gaus-e-Pak Bhaban (Motijheel) to Purana Paltan and TSC
2. Elephant Road market to shahbag and TSC
3. IDB to Mirpur 10

The AL Government scandals: Mermaid Cafe

Local Awami League politician with OC of Ramu thana with a battalion of police attacked and destroyed Mermaid Eco Resort today and beat up employees of the place. The politician’s goons had been asking for toll from the resort for a long time and the owner refused to give them anything. The resort is built on privately-owned land. The room that the owner and his wife lived in was also attacked with hand-made weapons.

The owner of Mermaid Eco Resort bought the land seven years ago and it was formally opened last year. The cottages and restaurants were all built on his private land according to him but as eco-resorts go, the lake and the beach, which were part of the resort was government-owned land. The owner asked for bondobosti of the government-owned land but did not receive it yet and in the last two years he has been paying money in different amounts under threat from local politicians.

TNO Mohd Saidul Haq, AL local politician Osman Gani, Magistrate Rafiqul Islam and the NOC were involved in this.

According to the TNO, the government officials harass the businessmen there in various ways all the time. The businessmen are forced to give discounts to them and their relatives. Recently the TNO’s shashuri had stayed at Mermaid and they had charged him the full amount. TNO was livid at Mermaid’s owner and they got into a heated exchange of words.

They came and destroyed the place without any warning, with 9 trucks and a bull dozer and about 200 people. They destroyed 20 large trees and 200 small trees. TNO even loaded a large LCD TV, an IPS and some art work into his private car. Guests were asked to leave and within 2 minutes the demotion began. Parvez Murad, an actor who was staying at the resort was injured when he tried to talk to them and his mobile snatched away when he tried to take video footage.

Lately, people from all media started talking about the issue and a press conference was called on 28th July 2010 to keep the tourist spot alive.

One of witness mentioned on facebook that some locals (people from tourism sectors) said that the land was not properly legalized and there was a case. But most people didn’t think it as an attack on the whole tourism sector rather more personal. But, political involvement was there, as I think, it was not a news in any national daily today. But is it on the whole tourism sector itself(Though Mermaid Eco Resort has the highest face value)??

A media person showed his concerns stating that, “I think the AL high command is as surprised as us..but thats the biggest problem with the AL government..they dont have much control over their own student and regional wings..i personally think this is partly/mainly due to ‘sidelining’ of the old guards razzaq, tofail, amu, suronjit & co who virtually controlled the field level activities of AL.”

Interestingly, the government has announced 2011 as the “tourism year”!!!

France bans Hijaab: Taslima Nasrin unveils !!!

Taslima Nasreen reveals her cleavage at her French residence and shares them on facebook to support the French parliament’s decision to ban hijaab!!! She got fierce on the words from Barack Obama, who thinks every religion has the right to practice their rituals and customs anywhere in the world.

Interestingly, on one of her interview with secularhumanism she said,”When I began to study the Koran, the holy book of Islam, I found many unreasonable ideas. The women in the Koran were treated as slaves. They were nothing but sexual objects.”

Tablet Query: What is she trying to promote here?

Taslima Nasreen- for her, living in the shadow of death is not a new experience. From as early as 1990, Islamic fundamentalists have been baying for her blood for her views on religion, traditions and the discrimination against women. Taslima, a practising medical doctor, was forced to quit her profession. In 1993, her novel Lajja (Shame) was banned by the Bangladesh government, and the following year she went into hiding to avoid going to jail, where, she felt, she would be murdered. After two months in hiding, Taslima left Bangladesh in 1994, with several fatwas against her, and has since been living in exile under police protection wherever she goes. Speaking to Frontline, Taslima said“I have never thought of apologising because I never felt I had done anything wrong,”.

At Nottingham in England, Islamic students attacked me. At Concordia in Canada I had to stop speaking because of Muslim demonstrations. Police were on hand when I spoke at Michigan and at Harvard. Hundreds of French gendarmes have been on duty when I spoke. When I first was hiding in Sweden, as many as a hundred policemen and policewomen were my guards.

Earlier, France has placed an emphasis on laïcité, or secularism, in modern society. As part of this desire to separate religion and government, religion is given no special status though it is respected and can be freely practised. This system was initially established to prevent religion from interfering in government affairs. Today, the same concept is being applied in support of the ban on religious symbols in France’s public schools.

“Secularism is one of the great successes of the Republic,” said President Jacques Chirac in an address to the nation. “It is a crucial element of social peace and national cohesion. We cannot let it weaken.”

However, Mr Barack Obama had other ideas. He stated, “The United States government has gone to court to protect the right of women and girls to wear the hijab and to punish those who would deny it . It is important for Western countries to avoid impeding Muslim citizens from practising religion as they see fit — for instance, by dictating what clothes a Muslim woman should wear.  We can’t disguise hostility towards any religion behind the pretence of liberalism.

I reject the view of some in the West that a woman who chooses to cover her hair is somehow less equal, but I do believe that a woman who is denied an education is denied equality.”

On the contrary, Silhem Habchi – the president of a women’s rights movement association in France said, “I’m very disappointed. Obama, the first president to represent diversity, is supposed to symbolise peace-making. And yet, he forgot one half of humanity. I’m furious. It’s like he tried to make a compromise with the Arab world with women paying the price. Trying to get closer to the Muslim world in turning a blind eye to women’s rights, to democratic values and to the right of emancipation, is to exploit women. He can’t truly want to fight against religious extremism and give in over the hijab issue at the same time. The hijab flies the flag for extremism.”

Casillas kisses girlfriend

Casillas and Carbonero

This is the moment Spain’s captain Iker Casillas seals his World Cup win with a kiss as he snogs his reporter girlfriend live on TV.

The goalie couldn’t contain his emotions as he was interviewed by Sara Carbonero moments after he lifted the World Cup trophy.
After the footballer broke down in tears, Miss Carbonero asked if he wanted time to compose himself.
He replied: “No, this is what I want to do,” before grabbing hold of her and planting the smacker on her lips to her surprise.

The emotional scenes were a far cry from the atmosphere between the pair six games ago, when the goalie was berated by his girlfriend in a TV interview after Spain’s shock defeat at the hands of Switzerland.

4 Types of invited guests at Wedding…

After attending 6 occassion in one fine chilly winter evening, what else do you expect me to write? It’s not happening because hundreds of people are getting married but because each of them actually inviting thousands of people. I don’t get the reason behind calling so many people at the marriage ceremony when it’s only the awesomeness of the stage, bride’s look and the food menu is all that people discuss on their way back home, unless you are anyone closely related to the bride or the groom. Then you would be more engaged to pose perfect in front of the camera than looking aside whether the bride is feeling good about taking the corrective shots.

There are 4 types of guests; relative, official, friends and potentials. By potentials, I don’t only mean my future boss or the rich guys with great investment power but I would like to include those “to be” boyfriends or girlfriends of the groom or bride’s siblings and friends. The latter mentioned guests within the 4 categories are super cautious about every move as their future mother-in-law is watching them with the hawk eye. They are probably as more cautious than the bride or the groom on stage. Believe me, I have seen guys who would experience all torments yet spend a huge time playing with his girlfriend’s little brother whereas more than the accumulated time that he spent playing with his girlfriend’s hair.

How about those hot shot officials or bosses who would arrive with a huge box of gift just to boost up his employees motivation to work, arguably to prove himself  “rich with gifts”. These people might just head up straight to the stage, take some snaps while their chuffeur carries the gift box to the table assigned for receiving gifts and tagging them with a circle “420”, Mr. Babar Hossain, Baridhara. The chauffeur would make sure they mention the designation of his boss on the gift registration copy.

Look at those digital photographers who can take corrective measures right away and take another snap if required unlike those days when one snap meant 1/36 costing 2000/36 equals to 55.55 taka. These days, wedding photography has become an art of rare angles, unexpected shots and post wedding manipulation. The good thing is, photographers can understand the nature of people’s perception within a few days right after the photos are posted on facebook. Every time you would write “Nice shot” on the comments, makes them eligible to charge higher in the upcoming season.

Notice the chauffeurs, they are having their own party, young ones would be shitting about their bosses and the older would be patronising their loyalty towards his profession. Whoever makes a better impression within the short time adda, actually gets more “khatirdari” at the dinner table. Least to mention, they would only sit in a flock and carefully would watching their bosses whether their face is showing any sign of leaving the venue soon. Two things make their adda livelier, beautiful girls and experiences gathered while serving duties for wedding cermonies. Let me share a secret; if you want to know about any guy or girl, just try to know who’s her chauffeur. Believe me, they can provide you with the rawest data.

Dancing on the stage is never so easy and it’s worst if you see the ‘beyaras’ looking at your female friend with an utter pervert look. It’s their democratic right and we can’t even do anything about it, they are also human being.

Put some observation on the other sides of the stage, surely will lots of interesting things happening around you. Share it with the world, it’s fun.

Marketing Jackass

by Riyad

What would the biggest challenge be for an aspiring marketer in the 21st century? Well to me the biggest challenge would be marketing to the generation of what we loosely call…. Jackasses!

Feeling confused, stereotyped, offended? Don’t be! The moral deterioration of future generations is inevitable. It says so in our religious scriptures; we are nothing but this humankind of constant moral dilution, slowly moving towards apocalypse! As a smart marketer, you have to stop whining and accept that fact, or else you would be a failure! This rampant generation of Jackasses is perhaps the most important segment for many consumer goods. Look at some of the top brands in the world – Levis, Axe Deodorant, Fast Track and all their ‘disciple’ competitor brand; they all target the same generation! There are video games where kids learn to beat up old people! Want a broader look into this…why not! Look at how the villain characters of the movies over the years have evolved – the deceitful third wheel in a love triangle in the 60s to mad scientists in the 80s to mafia drug lords and bank robbers in the 90s to ferocious vampires with symptoms of necrophilia that we see today.

Don’t you see a trend here? Our moral state has deteriorated over the years at such a rate that movie makers realized they have to lower the bar further more to establish the concept of ‘bad’ to new generation viewers. So be smart; accept the jackass-generation rather than denying their existence. Who knows, may be a future successful tagline for a cigarette brand can be: “Cigarette is bad, but drugs are worse! So be smart and choose slow death over fast death….choose XYZ cigarette today!” Marketing as a career doesn’t look that hot now, does it?
